ANTONIO FERNANDEZ ALBA, in memoriam

Antonio Fernández Alba, illustrious and enlightened architect, academic of the Royal and Fine Arts Universities, has recently passed away. From the ESTEYCO Foundation we want to join the tributes that other institutions have paid him and send his family and friends our condolences as a sign of affection and admiration. In 2000, we published a book of an imminently graphic nature, accompanied by short texts by Robert Khaiat, Julio Martínez Calzón, Roberto Fernández, José Luis Merino, Javier Rui-Wamba and Antonio himself, Espacios de la norma. Places of invention. 1980-2000. Professionally we worked with him on various projects and competitions, where Antonio’s generosity was always evident.

Espacios de la norma. Places of invention. 1980-2000. 1980-2000.We would like to collect here an excerpt from the text he wrote for the book on the 25th anniversary of the Foundation, which is a true reflection of his way of facing the conception of the profession and which we consider to be still fully valid. “Dear Javier: In this long and extensive controversy between engineering and architecture to combine a proposal between form and function in the construction of the space necessary for the city we inhabit, it has always seemed to me that the philosophy around the space of the city required for the true knowledge of it to bet on ideas rather than on the publicity of its results; a doctrine that eloquently exalted the monumental or utilitarian forms of engineering and some architectural works of the late nineteenth century and avant-garde of the early twenties.” The book Spaces of the Norm. Places of invention. 1980-2000 can be downloaded in PDF format through the Esteyco Foundation website.
