FLOATING OFFSHORE TECHNOLOGY COULD IMPROVE THE COST-EFFICIENCY RATIO THROUGH THE EUROPEAN FLOTANT PROJECT

The European Flotant project will develop a new floating, low cost offshore wind technology, optimized for deep water (100-600 m) and capable of supporting a 10+ wind turbine MW. The initiative will develop the basic engineering needed to improve the cost-efficiency ratio, as well as studying the social and socio-economic impact to increase the acceptance of floating offshore energy in deep waters.

The Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands (PLOCAN) leads the project together with the technical coordination of the Cobra Group and 17 other partners from various countries such as the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands, Ireland, France, Greece, Croatia and Slovenia. Recently they celebrated the first general assembly that marks the beginning of the project with the presence of all the partners and in which the lines of action were addressed during the next three years.

This will be a new breakthrough in innovation in this type of technology, establishing a consortium of collaborators including companies and entities such as Esteyco SA, Innosea, Future Fibers, the University of Exeter, the University of Edinburgh or the Research Association of Plastic Materials and Related (Aimplas). Flotant receives funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No. 815289.
