ONE STEP CLOSER TO INNOVATION IN FLOATING OFFSHORE WIND
We are pleased to announce that the WHEEL prototype project (Wind Hybrid Esteyco Evolution for Low-Carbon solutions) has received a favorable resolution in its environmental permitting process by the General Directorate for Environmental Quality and Assessment (MITECO), as published in Spain’s Official State Gazette (BOE) on July 12.N
This milestone marks a key step toward the installation of the 6 MW floating wind turbine prototype at the PLOCAN (Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands) test site, located off the northeast coast of Gran Canaria. The project includes its power export infrastructure and will connect to the previously developed ELICAN prototype (bottom fixed, gravity based) by Esteyco.
The aim of WHEEL is to validate a next-generation floating wind solution under real operating conditions — optimized for deep waters and combining innovative structural design with construction and operational efficiency. The resolution highlights the project’s environmental compatibility, following a rigorous evaluation process and consultation with more than 30 public and scientific entities. This reinforces the feasibility of deploying environmentally respectful marine renewable energy technologies
At Esteyco, we thank all the institutions involved and reaffirm our commitment to decarbonization, technological innovation, and the sustainable development of the offshore wind sector.
