ESTEYCO TO TRANSFORM THE GUADALMEDINA INTO A GREEN CORRIDOR CONNECTING MÁLAGA

Esteyco, together with Martí Franch Studio, will draft the urban integration and renaturalization project for the Guadalmedina River between the Armiñán and Perchel bridges. The proposal aims to transform the urban riverbed into a large green, social, and climate corridor that connects neighborhoods and revitalizes the center of Málaga.
Through light-permeable bridge-plazas, tree-lined boulevards, and a renaturalized riverbed with native vegetation, the project seeks to integrate the river into city life, enhance biodiversity, and create high-quality public spaces. The proposal combines safe hydraulic solutions with sustainability innovations such as photocatalytic pavements, solar and geothermal energy, and sustainable drainage systems. It also includes efficient water management and an accessible, safe design using durable, low-maintenance materials, consolidating the Guadalmedina River as an ecological and urban backbone of Málaga.
This initiative will generate a total of 76,115 m² of new green areas, of which 28,210 m² will be located on the urban surface and 47,900 m² within the riverbed.

In order to achieve these objectives, the project includes the following main actions:

Construction of five bridge-plazas over the riverbed connecting both banks of the river and creating 12,300 m² of new public space for citizens, with 5,410 m² of new green areas.

Development of a 1,400-meter linear park within the riverbed, combining citizen-use areas with a central renaturalized channel featuring native vegetation, grass, and irrigation channels. This area will contribute 47,900 m² of new green spaces.

Construction of 2,500 meters of new road tunnels along both riverbanks to bury traffic and create two peaceful linear boulevards, along with the redevelopment of the surrounding area, totaling 57,000 m² and 22,800 m² of new green areas.
