ESTEYCO LEADS E4XTREM, A NEW PROJECT TO ADVANCE RESEARCH TOWARD FUSION ENERGY
The E4XTREM (Research, design, study and testing of components subjected to extreme environments for industrial validation of Breeding Blankets technologies associated to the development of magnetic fusion reactors) project has been approved and will enable the development of new tools and prototypes to continue progressing on the path toward fusion energy, one of the major international efforts to achieve a clean and sustainable energy source in the future.
The initiative will launch FASTER (FAcility to Support Tritium breeding Technology Experimental Research), a unique experimental installation that will make it possible to test different types of components related to tritium production, a key element for future fusion reactors. Thanks to this infrastructure, materials can be tested, their behaviour under demanding conditions can be studied, and the development of new technological solutions can be accelerated.
In addition, E4XTREM will support the upcoming international facility IFMIF‑DONES, contributing to the design of new modules and prototypes needed to continue advancing in the preparation of materials that will form part of tomorrow’s fusion reactors.
Esteyco leads this project, which includes the participation of the research centres CIEMAT, esDONES and Tekniker, as well as the companies AVS and Empresarios Agrupados.
The project is funded under the TransMisiones initiative, a coordinated action jointly financed by CDTI for the industrial partners and by the Spanish State Research Agency (AEI) for the participating research organizations. The project has an expected duration of 48 months, starting on 1 January 2025 and ending on 31 December 2028, with an allocated budget of €4,551,235 for the CDTI consortium and €1,404,003 for the AEI consortium.
