TELWIND TRANSPORT TANK TESTS AND REAL-TIME SIMULATIONS COMPLETED
The TELWIND towing tank tests took place during June 2018. The scaled model was subjected to several sea – states and towing speeds, in order to capture the structure response and, to monitor the main parameters such as motions, accelerations, loads, etc.
The outcomes from this tank test campaign have been used to calibrate a purpose-built numerical model using the software “Ship Manoeuvring Simulator”. It is a tool developed to simulate, in real-time, ships manoeuvrings and, it has been specifically tuned for TELWIND platform transport.
Both structures, upper and lower bodies, are simultaneously transported to the final offshore installation location. The main tug tows the upper body (where the turbine is placed), and the lower body shall be dragged (located a certain distance behind) by the first one.
“The real-time simulations have provided a closer vision to what the transport of the TELWIND platform really is and, they have allowed to virtually extend a common tank test campaign, carrying out this operation for several weather conditions which are very hard to be reproduced using a scaled model.” explains Sergio Hernández, ESTEYCO Naval Architect responsible of hydrodynamic simulations.
This simulator brings the opportunity to track every motion and tension for all involved structures and towing lines, respectively.
“The “Ship Manoeuvring Simulator” model faithfully reproduces the tug vessel tows actions onto the TELWIND structure, which are not captured by other simulation software or towing tests such as, towing force or speed real-time variations” said Jesús Fernández, CEDEX responsible of TELWIND transport tank tests and simulations.
