Barcelona City Council will carry out a one-year trial in the Poblenou neighbourhood to evaluate three types of new, more sustainable “panots” that could be used throughout the city in the future. These panots, which are the traditional tiles in the streets of Barcelona, are part of a project promoted by the municipal foundation that promotes urban innovation in Barcelona BIT Habitat to find a more sustainable and appropriate version for the 21st century.

The three proposals, called ‘Panot of the 21st Century’, ‘Panot +’ and ‘R3PANOT’, share the traditional flower panot design, but incorporate innovative features. Recycled aggregates and cement from steel slag have been used in its manufacture, with the aim of reducing CO2 emissions and the carbon footprint. In addition, these new panots will help reduce noise, the heat island effect and neutralize polluting gases. Además, estos nuevos panots ayudarán a reducir el ruido, el efecto isla de calor y neutralizar gases contaminantes. La prueba se llevará a cabo en la obra de urbanización de la calle Almogàvers entre la C/Badajoz y la C/Roc Boronat, de la cual ESTEYCO lleva a cabo la dirección de obra. Durante el próximo año, se evaluarán aspectos como la resistencia, el comportamiento acústico, la durabilidad, la filtración de agua y la capacidad de limpieza de los tres tipos de panots. Con base en estos resultados, se definirán las condiciones para futuros contratos de obras públicas en la ciudad. Estos cambios apuntan a hacer que los pavimentos de Barcelona sean más sostenibles y respetuosos con el medio ambiente.
